Message from Superintendent Larry Hook....

Hello,

The Carlisle Local School District stands at a crossroad. Do we move this district forward or does it move backward? The reality is that the State of Ohio continues to reduce our funding; therefore, we are forced to cut services to our children and community. Most recently the State is reducing our budget by $194,000 this year and assuming that nothing changes it will result in another $194,000 in reductions next year.

Why can’t you “live within your means” is a comment I heard recently. The truth of the matter is…WE DO! We have been cutting positions and services for the past 5 years AND our entire staff (teachers, bus drivers, custodians, secretaries, administrators, etc.) has agreed to a two year salary freeze in an effort to stretch taxpayer dollars. Additionally, it is important to know that the last time we had NEW tax money going into our general fund (for general operations) was the 5 year 6.81 mill Emergency Levy passed in November of 1998. This Emergency Levy was allowed to expire on January 1, 2004, at the same time that the 1% Income Tax began collections. In other words, one type of tax was eliminated and another replaced it. The school district did NOT receive any additional money because of this “swap” in types of taxes. As a matter of fact, the school district actually LOST money because the loss of the Emergency Levy was immediate in the school budget when it expired AND it took nearly two years for the Income Tax to collect revenue fully.

We did have a 2 mill Permanent Improvement Replacement Levy in 2001, but that money can NOT, by law, be used for general fund purposes.

I am sharing this with you so that you can be informed and help others understand the great NEED that we have as a school district. Please help us get the word out. Tell your friends, neighbors, relatives and acquaintances that it is time to show our Indian Nation pride. Our children are our future, both as a school district and as a community.
