Jones Introduces Resolution

Jones Introduces Resolution Urging Ohio Congressional Delegation to Oppose Federal Healthcare Bill

COLUMBUS—Citing backroom deals, the use of taxpayer funding for abortions and high costs that could threaten Ohio’s future fiscal stability, State Senator Shannon Jones (R- Springboro) today introduced a resolution in the Ohio Senate that urges the members of the state’s Congressional delegation to vote against the federal healthcare bill.

“While I agree that reforms are needed to our nation’s healthcare system, I believe the bill before Congress does little to control costs while placing additional burdens on states at a time when many – including Ohio – are facing immense budgetary pressures due to the economy,” Jones said.

Although Jones believes there are many reasons for members of Congress to oppose the proposed federal healthcare reforms, her resolution focuses on the requirement that states expand Medicaid coverage without providing the necessary funding. A publication by the National Governors Association and the National Conference of State Legislatures estimates this change could cost the state $349 million for calendar years 2017 through 2019, a move that could further exacerbate the state’s budgetary problems.

She is also concerned about the so-called “cornhusker-kickback” in the Senate version of the bill whereby Ohio and other states would pay for Medicaid recipients in Nebraska and a provision that would allow taxpayer dollars to be used to fund insurance plans covering abortion, which is contrary to long-standing state and federal policies.

“Asking Ohio to help pay for another state’s Medicaid enrollees is outrageous, and Ohioans have consistently opposed the practice of using tax dollars to pay for abortions, yet our concerns are being swept aside,” Jones said. “I believe it is imperative that the people who stand to be impacted the most by these so-called ‘reforms’ let Congress know they are opposed to the healthcare reform bill as it currently stands and should delay a vote until changes are made that will help bring about true reforms instead of unfunded mandates and potential tax increases.”

Senate Concurrent Resolution 24 will now be assigned to a committee for further review.

City Council votes to delay on report on Mayor's computer...

Last night City of Carlisle's City Council meeting, Law Director David Chicarelli was prepared to report on the findings on the Mayor's work computer that was confiscated back late last year.  Instead, Council voted 4-3 to delay the report because it seems they were not notified that the report would be read in the open session of last night's City Council meeting.  The vote also was cast to give Council and the Mayor time to prepare properly for the conclusion of the report.

The report has been delayed till the next City Council meeting on February 23rd.
